Why Real Madrid Have 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club history in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
Under international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
