The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
