The Boss Maresca Describes Lead-Up Time as The 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' at the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to the weekend's triumph against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old delivered a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game interview even after securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points lifted Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to consecutive outings.

Yet, when questioned about the full-back's assist and overall display, Maresca unexpectedly disclosed his displeasure over the preceding 48-hour period at the organization.

"How the players are eager to develop has been superb and this is the reason why I commend them - because with a host of problems, they are performing admirably after a tricky week," he commented.

"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the most difficult because several people didn't support us."

When pushed further on the specifics, the former Leicester City manager added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was aimed at supporters or the press: "I love the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."

Fitness & Suspension Woes

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and disciplinary problems, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly commend the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to acknowledge because the commitment from the players is remarkable."

Chelsea's win over Everton strengthened their standing in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled next week.

Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Remark

It was not immediately clear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the worst of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the coach had traveled back with his staff and players from Bergamo, held a training session at the training ground, faced a pre-game press briefing where he appeared relaxed, and engineered a victory over an high-flying Everton team.

It was unclear whether any specific media reports had unsettled him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something deeper from within the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's fans, some of whom have not yet fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
