Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
