Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years Old
The world mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and performer whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in popularizing reggae music worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of eighty-one.
“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his life’s path. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your support was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff was beloved for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and positive spirit earned him a large and loyal fanbase.
In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972’s drama film “The Harder They Come”, a performance that received critical praise and is considered a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff is one of just a handful of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
