Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.

He commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the potential of the company, and eagerly await observing their advancement".

The prominent academic, who previously headed the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The newly public messages revealed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it accepted his determination to resign.

"We value his many contributions and the insight he offered to the directors," OpenAI remarked.

Congressional Action

This announcement comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature agreed on this week to approve a measure that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will afterward proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has indicated he expects to endorse the bill, after modifying his view on the subject following objections from his followers.

A batch of financier-linked emails released by the House Oversight Committee days ago included numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The messages revealed that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to introduce Summers to notable global figures.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were released with the general audience, he expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish trust and mend bonds with the individuals most important to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He presided over Harvard from five years and remains a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles recently on this week, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank in DC where the professor was a prominent member, announced that he was not connected with the institution.

Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
