Our team is analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the site of where the images originated was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
