Flight operations have recommenced at Edinburgh Airport after a significant air traffic control outage grounded all flights.

All incoming and outgoing flights were suspended because of an systems problem that was reported at approximately 08:30.

Some passengers found themselves stranded in planes on the runway during the disruption.

Flights Resume with Residual Impact

Officials announced at 10:40 that services were back online, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "cooperation and patience".

Nonetheless, ongoing issues are anticipated to affect schedules. Services bound for key destinations like Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, and Bristol have been cancelled, with many others subject to postponements.

Officials had previously estimated that a significant number of movements could be disrupted.

"Travelers are urged to contact their airlines for the current status on their specific flights," officials reiterated.

Cause of the Chaos

The airport attributed the widespread suspension to an IT issue with its air traffic control provider.

Flyers are still being urged to verify the schedule of their flight before heading to the airport as backlogs are worked through.
