Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

A recent initialism emerged a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, per insights from health professionals including paediatricians. Typically, it is unusual for physicians to care for a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that violations are continuing. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, we are told, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of a person in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
