Diane Ladd, Famed For Her Role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at 89 Years Old.

The award-nominated actress Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.

The star, whose roles featured Chinatown, left this world in her residence in Ojai, California. This announcement was shared via an announcement shared by her offspring, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who appeared with Diane Ladd in several movies like Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my incredible hero plus my special gift being my mom”, stating that she was at her bedside as she died.

“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative along with compassionate soul that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were fortunate to know her. She is now with the angels.”

Early Career and Rise to Fame

Ladd’s early career featured minor parts in television programs including Gunsmoke and the seventies featured her performing alongside the legendary Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

In the same year, 1974, she shared the screen with Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s praised film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her acting brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.

1980s and Beyond

Throughout the 1980s, she was seen in the dramatic film Black Widow, a suspense story plus funny follow-up Christmas Vacation and appeared on the sitcom Alice, a comedy program based on her earlier movie.

In the following decade, she received an additional best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in David Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart where she played the mother of her actual daughter Dern’s character. The next year she obtained an additional nod for her role in the film Rambling Rose that also featured Dern.

“This was the film which Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she invited Laura and I to London for a special screening and a party dedicated to us,” Ladd said of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, holding both our hands, and weeping, seeing us act.”

That decade also saw roles in comedy Cemetery Club joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a comedy about politics, with John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy in which she portrayed the mother of Dern again. Those years also brought her TV award nominations for performances on Dr Quinn, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Collaborations with Daughter

She kept appearing alongside her daughter in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White satirical show the program Enlightened. She also appeared alongside actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.

Subsequent TV appearances featured the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.

Filmmaking Ventures

She also authored and oversaw the comedy film the movie Mrs Munck which starred Diane Ladd and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she said. “I was honored to direct him in a movie. Indeed, I stand as the only woman in history to helm a film with her ex. I humorously say: ‘I tell women, should you desire retribution, guide your former spouse.’ However, I’m joking.”

Family Ties

Ladd was also a relative of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact throughout my life”.

In 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with a respiratory illness and advised she had just six months to live but she regained full health once her daughter shifted her to a new hospital.

“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering like an injury, rather utilize it to investigate, to illuminate the way for personal and collective growth, then you are succeeding,” Ladd expressed.
