Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their release of a disputed video.

The Content That Provoked the Dispute

The clip, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in armed forces or intelligence positions.

"As we did, you all made an oath to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."

Trump's Furious Response

The recorded statement appeared to trigger a heated reply from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Leaders Respond

Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader released a unified announcement censuring the remarks.

"Political violence has no position in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our country with tremendous national pride and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the protection of these members and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these extreme online messages and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration continued.

Lawmakers' Strong Response

The representatives who were featured in the video also released a response.

"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who care for this nation and swore an oath to defend and support the founding document of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No threat, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that sacred obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the president deems it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "All citizens must unite and denounce the former president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."

Further Governmental Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is calling for the death of elected officials."

He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and absolutely."

The GOP leader supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of the legislature telling troops to ignore directives, I think that is historic in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also reportedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the offense of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the terminology and determine all that."

White House Response

During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative said. "There are active officials of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to members of the national defense, to active duty service members advising them to disobey the president's proper directives."

She added: "The purity of our armed forces depends on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
